PARTNERSHIPS BUILD A BRIGHT FUTURE
Nova Bus believes in the pursuit of excellence and in giving back to the community. For years, our company has been partnering with different social causes such as the Philadelphia chapter of the Conference Of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO), a nationwide organization dedicated to ensuring maximum participation of minority individuals, businesses and communities in all aspects of the transportation industry.
In August 2009, Nova Bus awarded two $2,500 scholarships to deserving students selected by COMTO’s team of industry professionals and academic representatives. One of the recipients of Nova Bus’ scholarships was Summer Tatum, a successful sophomore from Camden County College who has overcome tremendous personal adversity in pursuing her higher education.
Today, Nova Bus is pleased to announce that Ms. Tatum has successfully completed a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies with a Minor in Political Science from Rutgers University-Camden. Ms. Tatum graduated in May 2012. Our team was thrilled to hear the news and decided to contact her to extend our congratulations on this great achievement.
“I would like to thank the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials for awarding me the 2009 Nova Bus scholarship to help offset my education expenses. The scholarship arrived at a critical time in my decision making process,” mentioned Ms. Tatum in a testimonial. “I faced a tremendous challenge in covering the program costs. Coupled with the fortitude of a supporting family and armed with the Nova Bus scholarship, I was able to attend University,” she added. “The road to graduation day was indeed filled with challenges, great hardships and tears; but through my faith, perseverance, and sheer determination, I finished strong.”
In furthering her political pursuits, Ms. Tatum was accepted into the New Leadership New Jersey Summer Institute which is sponsored by the Center for American Women and Politics of the Rutgers University Eagleton Institute of Politics in New Brunswick, NJ. As a result of this program, she was offered the opportunity to work for the President’s re-election campaign.
Ms. Tatum is currently working as an AmeriCorps Volunteer in Service to America in the Philadelphia Mayor’s Office of Education and in the School District of Philadelphia, fighting poverty with passion and purpose through education. She also works closely with the Pennsylvania State National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in providing support toward increasing voter registration and turnout. In her spare time, she teaches Bible study and Sunday school to the adult population from her local church so that others can also benefit from her faith.
Ms. Tatum’s devotion to making a difference and giving back to her community is truly inspiring. “The future is a destination with an unlimited amount of potential and possibilities. I do not know what exciting adventures lurk around the next corner, but I am certainly in great expectation. I am not a victim of my life’s circumstances… I am victorious!” she concluded.
The Nova Bus team is proud to witness that its involvement had a real impact in helping Summer Tatum to reach her objective and would like to wish her tremendous success in her new career.
We hope that our continued investment in the COMTO cause will help other students like Ms. Tatum pursue their dreams and stimulate their interest to build a better future for themselves and the community.
